Space Prison

A dynamic VR shooter designed and developed for an amusement park. Players covered the map by moving through a physical set built to the size of the playable area. It connected to a back office to run the active sessions, keep the score of each one and report the important events in a game, and the information was then shown on screen.

Virtual reality was starting to gain traction, and the proposal was a VR shooter with arcade dynamics: an attraction that was unconventional and unlike anything the park already had.

This was my first VR project: I learned the technology as the development went along. How quickly I learned was valued, and it paid off. I took part in the game design rounds, though my main role was integration in Unity: executing the plan.

Behind it sat a back office that took information from the headsets as they connected, and several devices could be started in parallel. The score and the important events in the game went the same way, such as clearing a level or getting stuck at one part. The game also had dynamic difficulty, so the experience adapted to different players.

It was built and optimised for the Quest 1, and the deploy was then made on Quest 2. In 2025 the new version came under my management and was rebuilt for the Quest 3 and the 3S. I redesigned the systems and wrote a framework in Unity so that integrating new features would be straightforward. There I worked with my current partner at Coffee Cat Studios, Delfina, who assisted me in the final development of the game to get it working.

The game was rebuilt from scratch, its logic at least, updating features and improving the base project to make it feel more dynamic and modern. Errors that had been left in were fixed and the experience was improved for the operator, with better setup tools, and for the end user as well, because the experience was smoother and more complete, with more interactions from both the narrator and the gameplay under the new difficulty system.
